Monumento a Colón

Charles says

If you don't mind paying the 5€, the views of La Rambla from the top are nice. However, skip it if there's a lot of queue

Information

Plaça Portal de la pau, 9998, 08038 Barcelona, España

HISTORY

The Cristobal Colón monument is sixty metres high and it was built for Barcelona's Universal Exposition of 1888. It is located in front of the port of Barcelona, at the end of Las Ramblas, because it was the port chosen by Colón to disembark when he got back from América. The monument was designed by architect Gaietà Buïgas i Monravà and the decoration of the rest of the sculpture was made by different artists.

In the interior of the column over which the sculpture is situated, there is a lift that takes visitors to an observation platform. It is located just beneath the feet of Colón and from there the city of Barcelona can be seen. The base is decorated with other sculptures, like lions and shields.

The statue is seven metres high and it weighs more than six tons. One of the hands of Colón holds a navegation letter and the other points to the horizon. Curiously, the finger isn't pointing to América, but to Mallorca's island.
