The Berliner Dom - in English 'Berlin Cathedral'- has suffered many changes throughout the years. First, it was originally part of the Berlin City Palace and in the 19th century the court church was transformed into a neo-classical building by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Later on, when Wilhelm III was the Emperor of Germany in 1888, he asked for a more monumental church which would reflect the imperial monarchy's power. The new church was consecrated in 1905, after 11 years of construction.
The building was damaged in the Second World War, so its restoration began in 1975 and was completed in 1993. The latest addition was in 2008, when the old dome cross was replaced by a new golden one.
