Checkpoint Charlie

Information

Friedrichstraße 45, 10969 Berlin, Alemania

Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous border crossing Point. It was located in the corner of Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße and nowadays there's a reminder of the point that was there during the Cold War: with the booth, the flag and the sandbags in its original places.

Its name was given because it was the 3rd checkpoint opened by the Allies in Berlin. They used NATO phonetic alphabets, and the first three ones are Alpha, Bravo and Charlie. It was one of the most famous crossing points between West and East Germany.

On 22 September 1961, Allied guards began registering members of the American, British and French forces on trips to East Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie was the scene of a tank confrontation a little bit later and it also witnessed lots of attempts to escape from East Berlin.
