The Begijnhof is an enclosed courtyard that dates from the 14th century. It was originally built as a sanctuary for a Catholic sisterhood who lived like nuns, the Begijntjes.

Between the buildings that can be found surrounding the garden, there's the oldest house in Amsterdam, Het Houten Huis, and also the Engelse Kerk, the English Church that still has its original medieval tower.
