New Synagogue - Neue Synagoge

Carlos says

The head of the local police, called Wilhelm Krützfeld, was one of the few people who stood up for his Jewish neighbours while they were being persecuted and their buildings were being destructed.

Information

Oranienburger Str. 28-30, 10117 Berlin, Alemania

The New Synagogue is one of the most important sites for Jewish Culture in Berlin. It was built between 1859 and 1866 in Moorish style and it now houses a permanent exhibition.

The building suffered destruction throughout the years, mostly during the Second World War. It was one of the synagogues that was set on fire during the night of the November Pogrom in 1938, but the head of the local police ordered to put out the fire in this one because he argumented it was a very important historical building.

It was never fully rebuilt after all the destruction, only the facade and the dome were restored, opening again in 1995. By the stones that are set in the ground visitors can have an idea of the size of the original building and of the destruction it suffered.
