Monument
Shoes on the Danube Bank
Information
Budapest, Széchenyi rkp. 8, 1054 Hungría
The Shoes on the Danube Bank is a monument that consists of 60 pairs of shoes made of iron, all pointing towards the Danube. The story behind it takes us back to the Second World War: Jews were often gathered on the banks of the river before being shot into the water, so they would be carried away by it. They were often forced to leave their shoes behind because they were considered a valuable commodity during the war, Nazis would then sell them or use them.
It was created by Can Togay, film director, and was made with the sculptor Gyula Pauer.
