Matthias Church
Pedro says
One of the most interesting and beautiful churches.
Information
Budapest, Szentháromság tér 2., 1014 Hungría
Matthias Church, officially called Church of Our Lady, is a Roman Catholic church that nowadays has holy masses, concerts and weddings. However, in the past it has changed its function many times.
The structure that's there today was founded by King Bela IV when he decided to move the royal residence to Buda, after Mongol invaders left in 1242, leaving Hungary in ruins. Then, Turks occupied Buda in 1526 and turned Matthias Church into a mosque, taking and destroying artifacts, ornaments, altars and paintings. When Buda Castle was finally re-gained from Turks by Christian mercenary troops in 1686, a new church had to be built on the remains in Gothic style.
