The 'Cais das Colunas' - in English 'Quay of the columns'- is located in the Square of Commerce in the center of Lisbon. The monument, that consists of two columns and marble steps, was designed as part of the project to rebuild the city after the 1755 earthquake.
The marble steps used to be the noble entrance to the city. Queen Elizabeth, for example, entered Lisbon through the columns and up the steps when she visited in 1957.
