Jerónimos Monastery is a religious building that was built between 1501 and the 17th century. It was built to honor the return of Vasco da Gama (Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea) from India. The Monastery has a Church, where the tomb of the explorer is located, along with the tomb of poet and writer Luís de Camões, and it also has a Cloister, with the tomb of another famous Portuguese writer and poet, Fernando Pessoa.

It has Portuguese late Gothic style, called Manueline style, and it was designed by architect Diogo de Boitaca. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983 and it was built on the same spot where the Ermida do Restelo used to be. This chapel was were Vasco da Gama and his sailors went to pray before going to India.

Jerónimos Monastery is a religious building that was built between 1501 and the 17th century. It was built to honor the return of Vasco da Gama (Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea) from India.
