The Altare della Patria - in English "Altar of the Fatherland"- is actually called Vittorio Emanuele II Monument. It was inaugurated in 1911 but completed in 1935, and it was built in honour of the first king of unified Italy,Victor Emmanuel II.
The monument is 135 meters wide and 70 meters high, and it includes huge columns and stairs made of white marble. On the top of it there's a sculpture of the king made of bronze and two chariots that are driven by the goddess Victoria.
Inside the monument is the Institute for the History of the Italian Risorgimento and the Central Museum of the Risorgimento. There's also the tomb of the unknown soldier, which has an eternal flame and is always guarded by two soldiers.
