Castello de Sant'Angelo
Information
Lungotevere Castello, 50, 00186 Roma RM, Italia
The Sant'Angelo Castle was originally built to be a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family (in the year 139), but a short time after it was finished it became a military building and then if became part of the Aurelian Walls in the year 403.
The name of the castle was given in the year 950. Rome had been hit by an epidemic of plague and the Pope at that time, Gregory I, had a vision of the Archangel Michael on top of the building which announced the end of the epidemic. In fact, in memory of that event there's a statue of an angel on top of the castle.
The castle has five floors, with a chamber of ashes, cells in which historical characters were incarcerated and rooms that worked as a Papal residence. In the upper floor there's a terrace with amazing views of the city.
In 1277 a fortified corridor was built between the castle and the Vatican City, in case the Pope had to escape from any danger.
