Kaminarimon Gate (雷門)

Information

1-chōme-3-1 Asakusa, Taito City, Tōkyō-to 111-0032, Japón

The Kaminarimon Gate is the entrance gate to Sensoji Temple. Its official name is Fujin Raijinmon, which means 'Gate of the Gods of Wind and Thunder', and the name Kaminarimon was given because in Japanese they refer to thunder as 'kaminari'.

The Gate has a gigantic lantern in the middle, that weighs around 700 kilograms, and has the kanji characters that mean 'thunder gate' inscribed in it. On the two sides of the lantern there are 2 statues: on the left there's the God of Thunder and on the right there's the Wind God. Japanese think of them as benevolent deities that guard Sensoji from storm, flood and fire, and people often pay homage to them for peace and abundant crops.
