The Imperial Palace East Garden is located on the grounds where the Edo Castle inner circles of defense were in the past. The only constructions of that time that remain today are the moats, entrance gates, walls and some guardhouses.
The Edo Castle used to be the residence of the Tokugawa shogun, who ruled Japan between 1603 and 1867. Between the years 1868 and 1888 Emperor Meiji resided here, before he moved to the new Imperial Palace.

Opening hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to 16:30. Admission ends 30 minutes before closing.
From mid April through August, until 17:00.
From November through February, until 16:00.
Closed on Mondays, Fridays, December 28 to January 3) and some special occasions. If Monday or Friday is a national holiday, the gardens are closed on the following day instead.
