St. Stephen's Cathedral
Information
Stephansplatz 1, 1010 Wien, Austria
St. Stephen's Cathedral is a Gothic Cathedral that's the symbol of Vienna. Its construction started in the 12th century and one of its most well-known features is the roof with its colorful tiles that create the coat of arms of Vienna and the Royal and Imperial double-headed eagle.
It has four towers, one of them has an observation room visitors can reach through 343 steps, the South Tower, and another one, the North Tower, has the most famosus bell of the Cathedral, the Pummerin, that's the second biggest free-swinging church bell in the continent.
Inside the Cathedral there's a treasure that includes relics decorated with gold and precious stones, liturgical text, books, monstrances and vestments. The tombs of several well-known people can be found in the building too, such as the one from Emperor Friedrich III, of Prince Eugene of Savoy and duke Rudolph IV. The Catacombs of the cathedral has several people buried there too, like the cardinals and archbishops of Vienna.
