Charles' Church - Karlskirche

Information

Karlsplatz 10, 1040 Wien, Austria

Karlskirche is one of the most important and famous Baroque buildings in Vienna. The church is dedicated to St. Carlo Borromeo, revered for aiding the plague victims of Milan in the 16th century, because in the early 18th century Central Europe was hit by the Black Plague and Emperor Charles VI made a vow to build a church in its honor if the city was saved. The announcement of the building of the new church was made in 1713, once the plague had passed.

Its architecture is unique because it has a combination of Baroque, Byzantine and Renaissance styles with a combination of ancient Greek and Roman elements.

Visitors can take an elevator lift to go up to the dome and admire the Rottmayr frescoes closely.
