The Praça do Comércio -in English 'Commerce Square'- is one of the most famous squares in Lisbon. A palace used to be in this spot, that's why it's still known as 'Terreiro do Paço' for locals, which means 'Palace Yard', but an earthquake demolished it in 1755. After that, the square was built and the buildings that surround it were occupied by the Government bureux to regulate customs and port activities, thus its current name.
Two of the highlights of the square are: the King José I statue in the middle of it and the Arch of Rua Augusta, which opens towards Augusta Street.
