Statue of Liberty

Information

1 Liberty Island - Ellis Island, New York, NY 10004, EE. UU.

Probably the most famous monument of New York City, the Statue of Liberty is situated in Liberty Island, south of Manhattan. It was inaugurated in 1886, time when lots of immigrants arrived to the country by boat. As the statue was the first thing they saw before they docked at Ellis Island, where they were greeted, it became a symbol of freedom not only for americans, but for the entire world.

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States to celebrate a hundred years of the american independence and to make the alliance between the two of them stronger. The exterior was designed by the french sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi and the interior by the famous Gustave Eiffel. It was built in France and in 1885 it was disassembled in 350 parts so it could be moved, first by train and then by boat.

From the date of its inauguration it receives around 3,5 million visitors per year. It can be seen only from the outside, access to the pedestal, where there is an observation platform and a museum, or access to the crown of the statue. For this last option visitors have to climb 393 steps, there's no elevator, and a reservation must be made beforehand.
