The Flatiron was given its nickname because of its likeness to clothes irons of that time. Its one of New York's most symbolic skyscrapers and because of that it appears in lots of television series and movies. Many artists, painters and photographers, have immortalized the building millions of times since it was finished in 1902. Two famous photographers that stand out are Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen.

Its appearance is often compared to a big ship, as it is located in the intersection between Broadway and Fifth Avenue. 

In the past it held a restaurant and an observation deck. Nowadays, it's an office building for small and medium sized companies in the Midtown South district of Manhattan.
