Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Monument

Colisseum

Information

Piazza del Colosseo, 1, 00184 Roma RM, Italia

The Coliseum, also known as Flavian Ampitheatre, is an oval ampitheatre that could accommodate between 50.000 to 80.000 spectators, making it the largest of its kind ever built. It took 8 years to build, from AD 72 with emperor Vespasian to AD 80 with emperor Titus.

It was used for mass entertainment events like gladiator fights, mock sea battles, executions, animal hunts and representation of dramas based on Classical mythology. Its use as such ceased in the early Medieval era, and later it was used for purposes as housing, a fortress, a quarry and a Christian shrine.

Nowadays it's considered one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and it's still a symbol of the Imperial Rome although it's in part ruined because of earthquakes and stone-robbers.
