Piazza del Popolo

Information

Basilica Parrocchiale Santa Maria del Popolo, 00187 Roma RM, Italia

The Piazza del Popolo - in English 'People's Square'- is located at the beginning of Via Flaminia, which was the main entrance to the city during the Roman Empire.

In the centre of the square there's an Egyptian obelisk that was dedicated to Ramesses II. It used to be in Circus Maximus during the 10th century, but it was moved here in 1589. In the Square there's also a basilica called Santa Maria del Popolo, which has two well-known canvases by Caravaggio and amazing decoration.

Two other churches are located in the square: Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto. These two temples look identical from the exterior, but hide several differences inside.
