2 Chome-3-1 Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo 111-0032, Japón

The Sensō-ji Temple is a buddhist temple that's the oldest in Tokyo, as it was completed in 645. There's a legend that explains its construction: in the year 628 two brothers fished a statue of the goddess of mercy, Kannon, out of the Sumida River. They put the statue back in the river, but it kept coming back to them, so the brothers decided to build the temple for the goddess Kannon.

The temple's complex consists of a main hall and a 5 storied pagoda. They had to be rebuilt after the war because they were almost completely destroyed.

A shopping street of over 200 meters, called Nakamise, leads from the outer gate to the temple's second gate, the Hozomon.

INFORMATION

Price: free admission.

Opening hours: Main hall: every day from 6:00 to 17:00 and from 6:30 from October to March.

The temple grounds are always open.
