Zojoji Temple

Agustina says

The picture of this temple with the Tokyo Tower behind is very famous because of the contrast it represents, traditional and new in the same area.

Information

Japón, 〒105-0011 Tōkyō-to, Minato City, Shibakōen, 4-chōme−7−35 増上寺

The Zojoji Temple was originally built in 1393, and it was moved to its present location 1598 by the Tokugawa family. They chose it as their family temple and the mausoleum of the family is at the back of the complex, containing tombs of 6 of the Tokugawa shogun. There's also a museum that exhibits how the previous Mausoleum looked like before the Second World War.

The buildings in the complex were rebuilt recently, except for the gate in the main entrance which dates from 1622, surviving through wars and natural catastrophes.
