Food
Mercat de Santa Caterina
Charles says
This market is less touristy than La Boquería and most of the stalls are still selling fresh food to locals. A good place to buy some food souvenirs ;).
This market is famous for its colorful roof, try to take some distance to have a look.
Information
Carrer de Colomines, 3, 08003 Barcelona, España
HISTORY
The Santa Caterina Market is located in the Born neighbourhood of Barcelona. It was built in 1845, on the grounds where the Santa Caterina Convent had previously been located and demolished in 1837. Currently, the market has posts where they sell fresh products and restaurants where visitors can enjoy dishes made out of those products.
The building was completely remodeled between 1999 and 2004. The architects were inspired by Gaudí to design the exterior of the roof, which is wavy and combines different colors. During the remodeling, remains of the convent were found, so in the underground of the market there is an exhibition that's part of the History Museum of Barcelona.
