Original from Valencia, this is now also a typical catalan dish. People from Barcelona usually eat it on Thursdays as it's included in almost all the Lunch Menus. However, it's also available during the rest of the week. In general, DON'T order it in the city center, as they'll serve you an industrial frozen one (they usually have branded signboards, "paella d'or" is the most common).

Vermouth is a herbs liquor (the most famous brand is Martini, but in Catalonia there are dozens of local brands such Miró, Iris or Yzaguirre) which is served chilly on ice, accompained by a tapa of olives, fries or fried fish.

"To do a vermouth" is a tradition in itself: we love to enjoy a moment of relax previous to Sunday's lunch, so we have a ceremony based on drinking a cold glass of vermouth with friends or family, in a bar or a terrace, and open our stomachs for the big feast which awaits us at home!

There are several names in Barcelona used for tapas.. Most tourists just know them as tapas and the other part are confused about which term is the correct… No worries, I have to confess that most of the Spanish are in the same situation…

Tapas: originally, it was the snack offered for free when you ordered a drink. The origin of its name comes from the word tapa, which not only means “snack” but also “cover”: the small snack offered was used to protect the drink from flies. Bad luck, free tapas are not very common in Barcelona, you’ll find them in cities like Granada or León. However, nowadays it's also used as a general term for a snack/dish ordered while having some beer or wine.

Ración: it's served on a big plate. It’s bigger than a tapa and ideal to share with a group.

Media ración: it’s half a ración and it’s ideal for 2 people who want to taste different things.

Pintxos/Pinchos: the name comes from the Basque country and it’s a small tapa served with a stick. Most pintxos have a slice of bread as the base.

Montadito: everything served over a slice of bread. Most of the time pintxos and montaditos are the same thing.
