Food
Mercat St Josep - La Boquería
Charles says
Come early in the morning if you want to catch the real vibe of the market. From 10am there's a huge number of tourists. If you want to buy Catalan and Spanish food souvenirs, in the Boquería you'll find almost everything. However, while it's a good market to buy fresh meat and fish at a good quality / price relation, it's not the cheapest place for food souvenirs.
If you want to eat something here the most famous bars are "El Quim" and "El Pinotxo". However, they're always crowded. In that case try "Boquería Central" which is on the opposite side of La Rambla.
At Boquería market, there's a fun Tour where you'll visit it with a Chef and later you'll learn how to cook a paella and eat it of course. It's a great way to taste a real paella (many places in Barcelona serve frozen paellas...). Book your Paella and Boquería Tour here

HISTORY
The Boquería market originated many years ago, outside of the wall that surrounded Barcelona so that vendors didn't have to pay taxes to get the products into the city. It was held on the Pla de la Boquería, where now lays one of Miró's mosaics. Throughout the years, Las Ramblas became more important and it was decided that the market would be moved to the place where once was San Jose's convent before it burnt down.
Currently the market has more than three hundred sale posts with a huge variety of products. Fresh fish, meet, fruit, vegetables, pressed juices and sweets are some of those products. There are also some posts which sale food from different parts of the world, such as Japan and the arab countries. Visitors can try dishes made from products offered in the market in restaurants that are located there.
