Basílica de Santa María del Mar

Charles says

My favorite church in Barcelona, I'm always amazed by its interior arches. At the back of the church, on the left side, there's a stained glass with FCBarcelona's shield as the team financed the church to repair it.

HISTORY

The church of Santa María del Mar was built by religious people of the port area of Barcelona and the Ribera, starting in 1329. They were the ones who invested money, work or both to build the temple, so the Basilica belonged to them and not to the royalty. It is said that the bastaixos, the dock unloaders, were the ones who brought the stones used for the construction from Montjuic, carrying them on their backs. In fact, there are figures that represent the bastaixos on the doors of the church.

In november of 1383 the construction was finished and the first mass was celebrated almost one year later. The interior is austere and the entrance of plain light was given a lot of importance. Its gothic style can be seen both inside and outside, with its octogonal towers and columns. Tourists can visit the interior and take a complete guided tour or just to the towers and rooftop.
