Take a moment to imagine it: the square crowded with people about to be deported to the concentration camps, not knowing where they were going, and inside of the pharmacy people, quietly, trying to find out what happened to whom.

"Apteka Pod Orlem" means "Pharmacy under the Eagle". The name was given because of the Eagle statue that can be found inside of it.
This pharmacy was directed by Tadeusz Pankiewicz and it was the only pharmacy in the ghetto that the Nazis gave permission to continue with the activity, because of the fear of the spread of epidemics. Taking advantage of this, the owner and his associates provided assistance and help to the people that lived in the ghetto.
The pharmacy, of course as a secret, was a place of trust to which Jews could go to speak to each other and exchange information (both prohibited by the Nazis). The Apteka also offered the possibility of sending and receiving illegal correspondence and money, and some even used it to hide Torah rolls and important objects that belonged to their family.
Inside of the pharmacy you can find information, pictures and old objects of the workers of the pharmacy and of that time.
