Plac Bohaterów Getta

Take a close look at the way the tiles are arranged on the floor. You'll find some of them that form a line that's not like the others. That marks the direction in which the trains left the square.

On one end you'll find an old Police building from which the Nazis counted and identified the Jews. On the other side of the square, in one corner, you'll find and old pharmacy.

Information

Located in the district of Podgórze, which in 1941 was converted into the ghetto of Kraków, the old Plac Zgody was designated by the Nazi the place where the Jews had to congregate for deportation. Its name means "Square of the heroes of the Ghetto".

The square has an extension of 13.000 square meters and is completely paved with grey syenite tiles. On it, there are some chairs arranged as if they were floating on the pavement, all facing towards the same direction. They are there to honor the Jews and the belongings that they brought to this square while they awaited for their deportation, thinking they could take everything with them.
